However, toward the end of 20th century, the United States is waning while other economic powers are rising such as China. U.S. can no longer dominate in world trade regime. Most of the countries joined the World Trade Organization (WTO), including the United States, and follow the rules to get benefit from it. Reciprocity is one of the main principle of the WTO. It is especially true for China. In order to evade trade sanction from the U.S., China needs to join WTO for dispute settlement. But at the same time, China also needs to follow the rules of reciprocity to abide by the law of "fair trade".
In sum, World Trade Regimes can be dominance or reciprocity depending on the political power structure.
